Joe Issa Supports Expeditious Implementation of Strategic Initiatives to Advance Tourism Product
Member of the Past Presidents Advisory Committee of the St. Ann Chamber of Commerce Joe Issa is in support of the early implementation of strategic tourism initiatives to support the continued growth of the sector.
In commenting on the several air services agreements which Cabinet has given approval for Jamaica to sign with governments, Issa said, “The agreements will mean more airlift, visitors and foreign exchange for Jamaica,” noting “it will also diversify the support base and create opportunities for Jamaicans to learn new languages to further improve the human resource pillar and assure our quality.”
The countries with which air services agreements are to be signed include South Africa, Finland, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, the Seychelles, Italy and Portugal.
The agreements, which will provide for air services between Jamaica and each of the signatory countries, were said to have been negotiated at December’s International, Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Air Services Negotiation Conference in Nassau, Bahamas.
Issa also cited another strategic project which he said: “will make Jamaica’s tourism product more competitive by addressing issues affecting certain pillars on which we are judged against other destinations.”
He stated that the country “has deficiencies in all pillars especially health and wellness and human resources which, if we correct will improve the quality of our tourism product and put us at the top of popular global destinations.”
Issa was commenting on a draft Tourism Networks Policy and Strategy, which Cabinet has already approved for tabling in Parliament as a Green Paper, to create linkages with gastronomy, health and wellness, sports and entertainment, shopping and knowledge.
The main objective of the network's policy and strategy is to improve Jamaica's global competitiveness, compliance and quality assurance in tourism.
In yet another strategic move, Issa cited news reports which said the authorities would no longer approve the expansion of training in the tourism sector through the establishment of a hotel school. He said instead, this will be done through the establishment of the Jamaica Centre of Tourism Innovation, which will provide a new type of training programme for graduates with degrees in tourism and the culinary arts.
According to reports, “the new proposal envisages a change in the training modality to an internship programme with hands-on experience, through a mechanism of collaboration between hotel operators and tertiary educational institutions and the appropriate certification and licensing.”
